A Soldier’s story.

This is the story of an ex-soldier who quit the army and now provides an invaluable service to the over 50s, but who still is in great demand by the under 50s.

It is said, “exercise cuts risks”. Older people need to exercise moderately 3 times a week to reduce a deadly mix of risk factors to their health, said a report from Maryland USA.
Metabolic syndrome is when high blood pressure, cholesterol, and obesity combine to make a heart disease, diabetes and strokes much more likely.
However regular workouts such as walking and cycling cut the syndrome by 41 per cent in a study group aged 55 to 75.
Kerry Stewart who led the research in Baltimore Maryland said, “Older people can benefit greatly from exercise, especially to reduce the metabolic Syndrome.

This brief story is about GEORGE SPENCER, born 24 august 1932, who is a personal fitness instructor. But also much, much more !

Using skills learned in a military uniform to carve a niche in Civvy Street, is nothing new, but for one old soldier it helped him overcome his post-Army blues to provide a valuable service for others.

“I made the mistake of buying myself out" said George Spencer, who spent 12 years with Coldstream guards as an Army Physical training instructor, before leaving in 1974.”
“When I left the army it was a shock, I was lost and had no point of reference.”

George had problems settling down as a civilian and took various jobs as a milkman, builder, male model, but he knew he had a talent as a fitness trainer, and he turned this calling to his advantage and now runs a successful business in Fleet in Hampshire.

It is based on a gentle progressive exercise routine encapsulated into a specific individually designed life philosophy, enhanced where necessary by visualization and hypnotherapy techniques.

George does not believe that PT should stand for some sort of Physical Torture.

George has attracted clients from all walks of life and from a wide range of age groups. “I modify the therapy for different clients, same medicine, but different size bottles”

Those he has successfully helped, include –

European Kick Boxing Champion - Alex Reid
England Rugby – Vanessa Huxford.
Current Miss Wales, body building Champion – Clair Booth

Well fitted to succeed

Over the many years that George has been a fitness instructor he has added to his knowledge and experience, but the most important diploma of all that appears on the wall of his office, it his P.B.E., which is short for Practical Bloody Experience for which their is no substitute.

George’s first experience of organised physical training was as a young recruit in the Guards, at 6 am on a mid-winter morning he and his fellow recruits were ordered outside, it was so cold, he swares he tripped over a dead Eskimo outside the barrack room.

The drill instructor was screaming at all the recruits to line up in alphabetical order, one of Georges mates was another Geordie who was so cold he could not move, the instructor charged towards him and shouted “what’s you name sonny” Philips Sergeant came the reply, well get over there with the F’s.

Something strange happened to George on that cold winter’s morning, instead of grumbling like the rest of the platoon, while doing press ups on ice, George felt good inside. He thought this suits me and this could be my early mission in life.

It was then that George knew he wanted to become an instructor, and to teach. This was locked into his mind, like an engraving on steel, the mind had been set.

Then one unforgettable morning while on parade, the platoon officer called “Spencer you have been selected to go on the next physical training instructor’s course.” Eventually he went on the course at the Army School of Physical Training. (Also know as the muscle factory)

At the end of the course George was sent back to his unit to await his course results. A short while later he was marched in front of his commanding officer who advised that he had passed the course and he was to go to the quartermaster’s store to collect his PTI uniform, well done!

It was the happiest and proudest moment of his career to date. The idea had given birth to the idea. The visualization had become a reality.

George had taken his first step on his mission of life, now at age 75 he is still living the dream, he is still instructing and helping people from all walks of life to get fit of mind and body. He is writing books and articles, making motivation CDs, working with BUPA and SUNRISE Senior Living to enhance other people’s lives.

Still working with the premise of positive thinking, still trying to encourage “Self knowledge and self empowerment, especially now for Seniors”

He has now developed this wonderful, Life Philosophy for Seniors, and called it LAMMASU Life.

A health and fitness philosophy designed by a SENIOR for SENIORS.

                                 A FELLOWSHIP for positive thinkers.

One of George’s saying is “I love what I am doing, I do what I love”, don’t we all wish we could live life to that beat of that drum.
